There are so many different kitchen appliances, tools and food products that come in handy for me. Below are some I couldn’t live without or I just happen to love. I receive a small affiliate commission for products purchased from this page; however, I list only products that I love!
Thank you, in advance, for taking the time to purchase any of these products. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
I use Mrs. Dash, Original by adding add it to soups, and rice and beans/veggies and other dishes while cooking. It also brings some life to dressings and sauces. It has NO salt, which is a bonus because you can have all the flavors without the salt. Of course, if your dish needs a little help in flavor, then at least you can control the portion of salt by adding your own.
Product description: An all purpose, versatile blend of 14 savory herbs and spices including onion, black pepper, parsley, basil, orange peel and tomato adds flavor excitement to any dish.
Ingredients: dehydrated onion, garlic powder, black pepper, dehydrated carrot, lemon juice solids, dehydrated orange peel, parsley, tomato powder, citric acid, lemon oil, celery seed, basil, bay leaves, marjoram, oregano, thyme, savory, cumin, mustard flour, cayenne pepper, rosemary, coriander.
Look at that list! Everything looks like something I would put into my body. The only ingredient that is not ideal is citric acid, which is a preservative. Although it is naturally found in some citrus fruits, commercially used citric acid is not.
I’ve read different reports on citric acid. Some say it is produced by a mold that is fed sugar (usually corn-derived). To me, it’s important to recognize that it is a commercially synthesized product. It is just something to keep in mind. I think the main point here, is that on the Mrs. Dash list, it is the only ingredient that gives me pause. Ideally, the best herb and spice mixture would be one that you make yourself.
You can find Mrs. Dash products almost anywhere, but if you cannot, click on the image and order through Amazon.
Bragg’s Liquid Soy Seasoning is amazing! It is marketed as a “Natural Soy Sauce Alternative”, but it’s flavor is different and unique. Sometimes I use it along with other flavors and herbs/spices. Other times, it stands on it’s own well, sprinkled over my rice or barley throw-together dishes when I want that yummy Bragg’s soy taste or when I want some flavor, fast!
Warning: this product is high in sodium. The nutrition facts show there are 160 mg of sodium per serving, which doesn’t seem low. However, the serving size is quite low compared to other soy sauces. Most soy sauces list 15 mL (1 tablespoon) as their serving size, but Braggs lists it as 2.5 mL. So, if you multiply 2.5 x 6, you have 15 mL, the general amount considered a serving size, and you have a whopping 960 mg of sodium.
However, if you eat little salt elsewhere (very low or no processed foods with added sodium or you sprinkle only a little salt now and then on your food), then I don’t think it’s a problem to use Bragg’s. When I put it in a quick bowl of rice and beans, I try to use 5 mL (1 teaspoon) or less. That cuts the sodium by a third, bringing my dose to 320 mg.
Note: if you have high blood pressure or any cardiovascular issues, I would stay away from this product. Alternatively, you could take 1/2 teaspoon and mix it with 1/2 teaspoon of water, before sprinkling on your food, which would help to give you some moisture while decreasing the total sodium.
Ingredients: soybean vegetable protein, purified water
I LOVE that there are only two ingredients here. Soybean vegetable protein is another name for tofu.
Note: although the soybeans are not listed as organic, the product does have the Non-GMO Verified label. This is an important point, because almost all soy grown today IS GMO. Look for organic and the Non-GMO label.
Bragg’s products are available in any health food store, and they are beginning to appear in many grocery stores. Order through Amazon, by clicking on the image, if you prefer to have it shipped directly to your home.
EdenSoy Milk is always in my fridge. I buy several boxes at a time, which I store in a cupboard. Once, opened, they go in the fridge.
I don’t drink cow’s milk, except very occasionally when it is in something else (a rare cheese moment or within a baked good). I looked everywhere for a plant-based milk that didn’t have a bunch of extra ingredients. I wanted a non-dairy beverage that was as close to nature’s perfection as possible. Most, unfortunately have things like: cane sugar (or some other type of added sugar), natural flavor (which can be almost anything), gellan or guar gum, seaweed, sea salt, etc.
The organic EdenSoy Original Unsweetened was the only plant-based milk I could find that fit my criteria.
Ingredients: reverse osmosis purified water, organic soybeans
These ingredients rock! One problem. I couldn’t find this product anywhere in my city. I went to a health food store that carried other Edensoy products, and they ordered it in for me! After that store closed I was thrilled to see another health food store had started to carry it. Honestly, I usually buy 6-12 boxes at a time because it is not always available and I don’t want to run out. If you can’t locate any, click on the image and order through Amazon.
